Carl Friedrich Gauss

The department is named after Carl Friedrich Gauss, a German mathematics and science genius who made significant contributions to areas like number theory, analysis, differential geometry, electrostatics, and astronomy. Sometimes known as "the prince of mathematicians" and "greatest mathematician since antiquity", he together with Newton and Galileo, is in the league of most influential mathematics in the subject's history.

The aim of this website is best summed up by one of his famous quotes:

"Further, the dignity of the science itself seems to require that every possible means be explored for the solution of a problem so elegant and so celebrated."

I believe that in saying this, Gauss meant to say that students of Gauss's Disquisitiones Arithmeticae

mathematics should be iniquitous towards it and no less. While most are satisfied with finding the answer to a problem, I always try to explore the problem and know every detail of it, the link between various concepts and its mechanics. We should adopt the attitude of this great mathematician who was in constant pursuit of not finding an end in to the science, but a perfection of the end.

This attitude may have well been an extension of his genius as shown when he was at such a young age. In his primary school class, his teacher would occupy the students by giving out math problems one of which was to sum the integars from 1 to 100. While the students had great difficulty with the calculation, Gauss produced an answer within seconds using an intuitive method of pairing up the integars 1 with 100, 2 with 99 and so on. Such insight of finding new ways to solve a problem was consistent throughout his life.

Only by following just slightly this approach to mathematics, we will then no longer treat the subject as boring and will get to truly understand that Gauss meant, to find a solution so elegant and so celebrated.
